The fifth annual Jim Baugh Rockfish Holiday was fortunate to have been blessed with very calm seas. The trade off was 0 visibility. The fog was thick as pea soup, and it lasted all day. Heading up the Chesapeake it cleared some, we have a picture above to show just how much it had cleared up. All you can see is the bottom of the ship, that is about it. I fished the tournament all day, and ran 100% by radar, nothing else. There was just nothing to see except fog. This was one of the more interesting trips for sure. We were landing 34 inch Rockfish and 14 pound Bluefish all the while being surrounded by military and container ships in high traffic areas near the channel, with only our electronics to guide us. Exciting to say the least. Those fog horns sure can sound lound sometimes!
54 boats weathered the fog to try and catch the largest fish for this tournament. The Jim Baugh Rockfish Holiday is a FREE tournament with over $2000.00 in prizes. There is no registration, simply weigh your fish in Hampton before 5pm on tournament day. Afterwards we all hooked up at Marker 20 for a fresh Rockfish and Bluefish dinner and filmed a cooking segment.
The smallest fish weighed in for this event was 18.5 pounds. There were three fish over twenty pounds weighed, and most of the fish were 25 to over 50 pounds. Many anglers had fish in the thirty pound class, however once the top two placements were recorded at over 50 pounds, many did not choose to come back for the official weigh in. The top three fish were just to big!! These were the largest top three winning Rockfish to be weighed in the Chesapeake Bay for a tournament during 2006.
Just awesome catches!! Nov. and Dec. have certainly proved to be excellent times to be fishing out of Hampton VA.
We would like to thank everyone for participating and hope to see everyone again next year. Just log on to this page for further info.
Jim Baugh

Top two placements won a DF 2.5 Suzuki Four Stroke Engine.

Longest Length Fish- goes to Geoff Sheepers with 45 1\4 inches. Wins one Suzuki Four Stroke Engine.
The 2006 event started the week off with a blow of 25 to 30 knots and tornado warnings. The weather had subsided late in the week, then kicked back up to a small craft advisory all day Friday and most of the tourney day. Four to five foot seas held a lot of the small boat entrants from fishing, the Chesapeake was just to rough-AGAIN!!!
With 20 boats entered in the event, the pay out was $8000.00 in cash and prizes. The $30,000 prize for the new state record was eluded once again. The size of this years catch was across the board larger than the 2005 tournament. All placement fish went from 18 to close to 38 pounds.
This year we changed the rules a bit to enable each fishing team to enter two fish, the two largest fish caught that day. This meant that entrants could win in multiple cataorgies increasing the prize structure. We had three teams win in multiple catagories!! One team placed in three catagories, Geoff Sheepers. Geoff's team won in 6th and third place as well as the longest fish division!! Congrads Geoff!!
The tournament party was open to the public and held on Queens Way in downtown Hampton complete with a huge Oyster Bash, Pig Picken, Beer Truck, Fire barrels, and the Freeborn Blues Band! A great time was had by all!.

Forty teams fished for a total pay out of close to $42,000.
This included a $30,000 prize for the new Virginia state record Rockfish. Only two weeks prior to the event two fish came close to breaking the record, both caught in the upper Bay.
The first fish to be weighed was a beautiful 27 pound Rockfish caught by Richard Backus. At 3:15 in the afternoon, The Hampton CVB fishing team led by David Mitchell weighed in a whopping 34 1\2 pound Rockfish. Sixty minutes later, Mike Harvey weighed in yet another, 34 1\2 pound Rockfish!!!! Tournament rules stipulate that in the event of a tie, the first fish to be weighed will be determined the winner. Both were amazing catches. All top ten placements were quality fish between 18 to over 34 pounds, all excellent catches.
The tournament awards presentation was held in downtown Hampton on Queens Way. The Oyster Bash and Pig picking party started at 4pm, with live music by Don Butcher. Headling for the evening was the Freeborn Blues Band, which played to a packed crowed that was enjoying all you can eat oysters, fixed anyway you want them. We also had a large smoked pig that was completely eaten, only enough left for one barbecue sandwich for the tournament director. The catering was presented by Tempe Farms Catering, and they did a fantastic job!!! Also on hand was a beer truck, and many sponsored booths including Hampton CVB, Sunset Boating Center, Berkley, Johnson Family Boating and Century Boats, Bass Pro, WVEC ch 13, the US Coast Guard, and the Chesapeake Angler Magazine, Suzuki and Whalens Marine. The tournament party lasted until 9:30pm.
This was the first year that we had good weather for the tournament. Light winds only 5-10 knots kept everyone happy. This tournament was the largest group of Rockfish to be weighed for 2005. Most of the top placement were using live Eels for bait and fished the high rise section of the Bay Bridge Tunnel.
The Get Hooked On Hampton Rockfish Tournament Oyster Bash and Pig Picking would not be possible with out it's strong sponsor support. We would like to greatly acknowledge and thank all of those who supported our event this year.
First and foremost,
Hampton CVB and the City of Hampton,
Sunset Boating Center, Johnson Family Boating and Century Boats, Suzuki Marine, Bass Pro, WVEC ch 13, The Chesapeake Angler Magazine, Goodman and Sons Jewelers, The Radisson Hotel, and Saddle Ridge

Oyster bash Pics

The 2004 tourney Oyster Bash held Saturday night featured all you can eat oysters, NC barbecue, hamburgers & Hot dogs, a beer truck, fire barrel and music by the Don Butch experience. A good time was had by all, and the Oysters were fantastic.
Bad weather Pic

Well, once again our Rockfish tourney was plagued with bad weather. NOAA forecast for Saturday called for a gail warning with six to eight foot seas. The tourney held to the Chesapeake Bay Tournaments Weather Regulations and postponed the tourney until Sunday. The Sunday forecast called for 15 to 20 knot wind in the morning and then the wind would lay down by mid day. The tourney committee took out the JBO show boat on Saturday to the mouth of Hampton Roads in about a 35 mph wind. There were five foot seas near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The pic above is all we could shoot, it is the Pursuit leaning heavy to one side in a following sea.
Due to the weather forecast, most small boaters did not enter the tourney, total entries was 18. Down from 50 entries the previous year. Out of the 18 entries, only 13 boats fished.
The key to holding a tournament based out of Hampton is that much of Hampton Roads in a North wind is fishable on the lee side. The fact is that a lot of nice fish were caught in this event, and most of the quality fish came from the Hampton Roads area from the HRBT to the MMBT.
Hats off to Mike Miller and his brave crew of one who did venture out early on Sunday to fish the third island of the CBBT. It took Mike Miller over 2 \1\2 hours to get to the third Island, however it was there where he caught the 19 pound winning Rockfish.
We are all hoping that our forth year, 2005 event, we will be blessed with light south west winds. But as Mike Miller says,
"You are not Rockfishing unless you are on your knees"
Mike has now placed in all three of the Get Hooked On Hampton Rockfish Tournaments. Two weeks after the event, he also placed fifth in the Wallaces Rockfish tourney held in Hampton VA.

All winners received a trophy and a Hampton gift basket from the Hampton CVB. All entrants were also given two tickets for the Oyster Bash party Saturday night.
50 boats and over 230 anglers fished both the Hampton Roads area and the Chesapeake Bay in search of Rockfish. Big fish came from the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the third island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The wind was heavy with a N to NE wind blowing 15 to 20 knots. The Bay was rough however the cool front and the wind brought the Rockfish in the Bay biting hard. This event truley kicked off the season with a bang. There were other tournaments held the same day and also produced big fish. November and December still prove to be the best time to fish the Chesapeake for big Rockfish.
Some interesting facts about this years event.
* The winner of this years tourney also placed in the 2002 Get Hooked On Hampton Rockfish Tournament. The Boaters World certificate they won in the 2002 event they used to purchase some Stretch 25's. The lure that was purchased with last years winning certificate was the lure that the 29.5 winning fish hit on for this 2003 Rockfish tournament and won the event.
* Both the first and second place winners were Custom House Marina Boats. The actual third largest Rockfish caught was a 19 pounder caught on the Sagres. Had the Sagres not weighed in their previous 10 pound catch, the Sagres would have placed third and Custom House Marina vessels would have taken the top three placements.
* While fishing near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, one boat caught a five foot Conger Eel. Now that would be a big Rockfish bait.
* There were no Oysters left at the end of the tournament party. The few bags that were left went for 20 bucks with 250 Oysters in each bag. Now that is a lot of shucking.

The weather was not with us during this event, the wind blew a steady 20 knots,
with three to even four foot seas in the Hampton Roads area. A lot of boats
called it a day by noon, due to rough water conditions.
The Youth division had a good showing for this first year event, with over
20% of the anglers competing for the Youth Division.
There were many entrants from outside the Hampton VA area. Participants came
from area's such as Richmond, Midlothian, Yorktown, Paqosen, Newport News,
Powattan, Va Beach, and Chesterfield. However all the Placement winners were
from the Hampton VA area.
